“From the Fire Pit: Glimmers” Opening Night

I had a great night at the opening and I’m glad so many came by to share that experience. I can’t thank my friends and family enough for the constant support whether near or far. Without you I would not have gotten as far, met my wife, have our dogs, and so many other things. Now that both Lauren and my shows are up and mostly out of our hands we can concentrate on some great projects. There are exciting things ahead and when the time comes you will know about them. . . I know many of you are patiently waiting to hear.

Also for those of you who could not make the opening and would like to stop by please set up a time with me, the gallery, or stop on by on Sundays.

Working away!

The summer is in full swing which means September is lurking just around the corner. I’m working hard towards my solo show at Galerie Fledermaus (formerly know as Century Guild Chicago). It will be a wonderful collection of paintings that will continue the story telling, but will have a different look. I’m exploring characters and focusing solely on them. Backgrounds have been removed and my process left bare. They are Glimmers waiting for
their story.

While you are patiently waiting for September you can see my contribution for the “Curator’s Choice: 10th National Self Portrait Exhibition” at the Zhou B Art Center on July 18th (Day before my birthday).  Nothing like a self portrait to celebrate another year of my life.  This show will have a lot of great artists I admire and have come to know over the last several years, including of course my amazing wife, Lauren Levato Coyne.  Read more about about it on Sergio Gomez’s blog here.  So come out and celebrate with me!

The Excellent Unreal

Our wonderful friend Daniel Maidman wrote a fantastic article on our show Symbiosis for the Huffington Post (You can read the full article here).

“I think we, we of this school, who grew up on science fiction and fantasy pictures, are seeking out older mythological and magical material because it often comes from makers skilled at endowing their fantastical images with human mass. We are turning to their idioms in our attempts to reclaim this heritage.

It’s difficult work, and most of the time the results are stilted and fetishistic. They belong on the cover of a yellowing paperback. But some of our lot are making good progress. In my humble opinion, Levato Coyne and Coyne are doing it well. So that’s where my soft spot comes from. I like what they do, and I like how they’re doing it. I hope they have many years of happy work ahead of them, and I look forward to seeing where they go.”

Symbiosis

Symbiosis:
New Work from Lauren Levato Coyne and Rory Coyne

CHICAGO – Century Guild is proud to present Symbiosis, an exhibition of new work from Lauren Levato Coyne and Rory Coyne, commencing with an artist’s reception on Oct. 12 from 7 – 10 p.m., and continuing through Sun., Nov. 24. This is the first time the couple, who were married in July, will be presenting work together.

Symbiosis is the word the artists chose based on the mutually beneficial nature of their relationship and their shared studio practice, as well as a nod toward the animals that influence their work. However it is a fitting title for their art as well, as the work of each artist deals with relationships that are symbiotic in some manner, whether physical, emotional, psychological, or spiritual.

About Lauren Levato Coyne
Artist and writer Lauren Levato Coyne is a collector of exotic and unusual specimens with a focus on the entomological and anatomical. Levato Coyne’s work comes from the intersection of wonder and memory and how the body itself becomes a wunderkammer, amassing all manner of mysterious and confounding issues, dramas, revelations, and dilemmas that either touch us as a fleeting corporeal moment or take up permanent residence in the body’s collection. The themes of body as wonder, memory, and curiosity have been the foundation of Levato Coyne’s on-going series of self-portraits.

About Rory CoynesuntimesRory Coyne is emerging as a leader among a group of dedicated painters working in the contemporary allegorical realist movement. He began serious study of classical master works at SUNY Fredonia, where he earned his BFA in 2003. He then entered the graduate program at the University of New Mexico where he continued exploring and developing his love for classical, figurative technique, while also teaching. After receiving his Masters of Fine Art in 2007 he moved to Chicago to pursue his craft. Coyne’s paintings are fables rooted in reverence for the stories and techniques of the past, yet the subjects are fully contemporary in their dramas and personal symbolisms.

Back to the Grindstone

So I realize it’s been a while, but I’m back.  There were a few amazing distractions to keep me away.  I just got married to the amazing and astounding Lauren Levato Coyne.  My brother Vincent, whom I had not seen for seven years, came from the Netherlands to stay with us for two weeks.  However I’m back now, and as the title suggests it back to the grindstone.  Lauren and I have our first duo show at Century Guild Chicago in October, and we are both creating new work for it.  My work is taking the direction of the last myth piece I created, “Turning Seven,” and I’m taking the time to develop the overall compositions further.  Speaking of which Century Guild is now representing both Lauren and I in Chicago and Culver City and we couldn’t be more pleased!  Tom, Jerry, Chandra, and Melissa are an incredible team of human beings and we both feel lucky to be a part of their art family.  Besides we are now hanging on the same wall as Gustaf Klimt, Egon Schiele, Alphonse Mucha, and other amazing historical artists.  Not only that but the list of contemporary artists is nothing to snuff at either.

So needless to say we are in great company!

If you have been following me on Instagram or Facebook Page you’ll have noticed I have done quite a bit of different work.  Not as a replacement for the work I have done, but in conjunction with it.  They are done usually in one or two sittings, and has allowed me to explore brush stroke and color in different ways.  It has already started to inform my other work, and can’t wait to share it with you in the near future.

Working Away. . .

Many changes have come about, which I will announce in the next post.  Until then you can see I have been working away and honing some new skills of ala prima painting, which I usually don’t do.  Plus worked on a small fun commission of a tattooed women as a demon.  So here you have a sampling of the work I have done the last month or so.  So much more to come.
